HIPPY USA PROGRAM OVERVIEW & PHILOSOPHY
|
|
Founded in 1974, HIPPY, the "Home Instruction Program for Preschool Youngsters,"
is an internationally recognized, home-based, preschool program that empowers
parents to serve as their children's "first teachers." The
free, family-centered educational resource currently is targeted to three-,
four- and five-year-old children and their families in Southeastern Michigan. The program is funded by the
DeRoy Testamentary Foundation, the National Council of Jewish Women, and the
Oakland Schools Excellence in Equity Grant. OFS paraprofessionals
conduct weekly home visits and monthly family group meetings to promote the
joy of family literacy and learning, stimulate child development and provide
school readiness activities. HIPPY is especially helpful to families
that are isolated due to language, education or social barriers.

|
THE HIPPY USA PROGRAM IS WORKING:
|
National studies indicate that children who participate in HIPPY...
...obtain higher scores on standardized achievement, math and
language/auditory skills tests...
...display more appropriate classroom behavior than do children who have no
formal preschool experience.
