Mark your calendar to participate in the 2020 Census! The data collected helps determine federal funding for educational programs, mental health services, and more. For the first time, you can respond to the census online.

Participating in the census is a way to make sure your voice is heard on critical issues that impact communities, such as health care, education and emergency services. The statistics also are used to determine each state’s representation in Congress.

“Completing the census is a civic obligation, but even more importantly, it allows each individual to have a voice in our government,” Oakland Family Services President & CEO Jaimie Clayton said. “An accurate count is critical to the success of agencies like Oakland Family Services, which rely on safety net funding and support in the government. It is also so important the families we serve are counted because it ensures that their governmental representatives advocate in their best interest with regard to voting districts, community planning, funding for vital services and more."

Every 10 years, the census counts every individual living in the United States, including children and newborn babies, grandparents, friends, non-relatives, and everyone who is staying or living with you as of April 1, 2020.

The census is available in many languages, including Spanish. You will receive an invitation in the mail to respond beginning in mid-March and can reply online, by phone, or by mail.

Your responses to the 2020 Census are safe, secure, and protected by federal law. Your information cannot be shared with other law enforcement agencies, such as the FBI, ICE, or even local police. The census will never ask for Social Security numbers, bank or credit card numbers, money or donations, or anything related to political parties.
