National Wellness Month - Jaimie Clayton on WJR

August is National Wellness Month, a time to focus on self-care, healthy routines, and raising awareness about mental health. Oakland Family Services CEO, Jaimie Clayton, recently joined Ryan Ermanni on WJR News to share why wellness matters and how we can all take steps to care for ourselves, even during challenging times.

Jaimie emphasized that wellness doesn’t have to come with a price tag. While therapy remains one of the best tools for supporting mental health, and something we always advocate for, it’s not the only path. Activities like walking, reading, meditating, or exercising can help reduce stress and improve mental well-being. “Everyone just needs to find what works for them,” Jaimie shared.

She also encouraged people to take a “check up from the head up,” regularly pausing to reflect on how they’re feeling mentally and emotionally. This kind of self-awareness, combined with normalizing conversations around mental health, can help reduce stigma and make it easier for people to seek help.

Funding for mental health services has faced significant reductions, with certain state budget allocations still left uncertain. As Jaimie noted, philanthropic support is critical to bridging the gap and ensuring that essential services remain accessible to those who need them.

“If you’re not taking care of yourself, it is really hard to be there for other people,” Jaimie said. “It tends to be a marathon, not a sprint.”
