National Wellness Month - Fox 2 News with Valerie Whitaker

As part of National Wellness Month, Valerie Whitaker, a Home-Based and Children's Therapeutic Family Care Supervisor at Oakland Family Services in the Specialized Services for Youth program, recently spoke with Fox 2 News about how families can support children’s mental health, especially as they get ready to go back to school.

She shared that the first step is simply starting the conversation. It doesn’t have to be perfect. Using relatable tools like music, movies, or stories can help kids open up. The goal is to meet them where they are, speak their language, and create space for connection.

It’s also important not to expect too much too soon. Sometimes just listening is enough. Kids are going through big changes, and having someone to hear them without pressure can make all the difference.

Valerie also highlighted how physical wellness contributes to mental health. Every child is different, so it’s about finding what works, whether that’s being active, creating something, or spending time outdoors. Trial and error is okay!

Most of all, families can support mental wellness by creating new habits together. Sitting down, talking regularly, and making mental health a normal part of everyday conversation helps kids feel safe and supported.

And of course, these tools and tactics can apply to adults too. Adults can also struggle with mental health, and it is important to make it a priority! Just like kids, adults benefit from open conversations, healthy routines, and taking time to figure out what supports their own well-being. Whether it’s exercise, creative outlets, or simply being heard, everyone deserves space to care for their mental health
