Breaking the Stigma: World Mental Health Day

This World Mental Health Day, Oakland Family Services is shining a light on the importance of breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health because everyone deserves support, understanding, and hope.

Debbie Smith and Jaimie Clayton recently shared their insights in the media, emphasizing that taking care of your mental health is not only important but empowering.

Debbie Smith, Director of Treatment Services at Oakland Family Services, joined Fox 2 News to discuss the ways we can protect our mental health as the seasons change. She noted that as the weather turns colder and the holidays approach, feelings of isolation and stress can increase, and both adults and children are feeling the effects.

Debbie explained that kids are struggling since the pandemic because they missed critical developmental social time, and adults are facing new challenges, like returning to offices and adjusting to new routines.

But there’s hope, and there are practical ways to shift your mindset. Debbie encouraged viewers to train your brain by practicing mindfulness and focusing on gratitude.

When you catch yourself in a negative spiral, stop and find a new perspective. When you focus on what’s good, you’re not focusing on what’s bad.

Simple strategies like keeping a gratitude journal, reflecting on what went well each day, or finding ways to serve others, such as volunteering, can all help foster a more positive outlook. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is another effective approach that helps individuals reframe unhelpful thoughts and build healthier coping skills.

Meanwhile, Jaimie Clayton, President and CEO of Oakland Family Services, joined WJR to remind listeners how far we’ve come in reducing the stigma around mental health and how much more we can do together.

When World Mental Health Day began in 1992, there was much more stigma surrounding conversations about mental health. Today, we’ve made great progress. It’s more acceptable than ever to talk about your mental health or to ask for help, and that’s something to celebrate!

Still, the message remains as vital as ever: Seek help if you need it.

At Oakland Family Services, we believe mental health is health is important and no one should face their struggles alone. Our compassionate clinicians are here to listen, guide, and support individuals and families through every stage of life.

This World Mental Health Day, take a moment to check in with yourself and those around you. Practice gratitude, reach out for help when you need it, and remember, you’re not alone!
