Oakland Family Services named Top Workplace for 9th year in a row

Oakland Family Services has once again been named a Detroit Free Press Top Workplace, making 2022 the ninth consecutive year that the agency has ranked among the best 200 workplaces in Michigan.

Top Workplaces rankings are determined based on employee surveys that ask questions about workplace culture, leadership, benefits, and what employees like or dislike about their jobs. The survey is distributed by Energage, a Philadelphia-based employee research and culture technology firm that performs Top Workplaces surveys across the U.S.

This year, more than 95,000 employees from 6,569 Michigan companies were surveyed, more than double the number of companies that participated in 2021. Despite more competition than ever before, Oakland Family Services moved up two spots, taking home the no. 47 ranking among midsize companies with 150-499 employes.

As in years past, Oakland Family Services was one of few nonprofits and few human services providers to make the cut.

“This recognition affirms that we all have a role in creating and maintaining a culture that fosters teamwork, partnership and excellence,” President and CEO Jaimie Clayton told staff. “While our work can be hard, our workplace can make it easier.”

The Top Workplaces survey is one of many ways agency leadership works to engage employees in a supportive workplace culture. Feedback received on the survey is an important tool used to build on the agency’s existing strength and drive improvements where possible.

2022 has been challenging for workplaces across Michigan and the U.S., said Vice President of Employee Engagement and Organizational Development Julie Mison. Record-high job openings across the country give workers considerable leverage and choices in the labor market.

“Given this climate, we couldn’t be prouder to be voted a Top Workplace for the ninth year in a row by our staff,” Mison said. “During a time of unprecedented challenges, to have our staff rate us in these ways is truly validating of the efforts we put in place. We are so proud of our staff for bringing forward feedback when they have it, sharing what they need and asking the hard questions. The consistent focus on our mission and serving those in need are always at the forefront. Most importantly, we want staff to know they are recognized and appreciated for all they do to build brighter futures for the people we serve.”

Oakland Family Services has certainly felt the impact of the competitive job market, but Mison said the agency has taken a multi-pronged approach to staff recruitment, employee engagement and retention.

“This plan encompassed evaluating and improving as many strategies as possible around culture, compensation and benefits, training, flexible work arrangements (including hybrid work), employee engagement and staff recognition and much more,” she explained. “We are consistently asking ourselves: ‘How is Oakland Family Services going to position ourselves to offer staff something different and unique? How can we assure we provide the absolutely best experience for staff? What can we do to compete with for-profit providers? How can we assure we are meeting the needs of staff?’”
